Winter aquaponics plants
Few weeks ago, I released a video about the winter aquaponics plants I am growing. As winter is the coldest period of the year and the temperature can reach minus 2C here in Melbourne Australia. I thought it would be interesting to have some follow-up videos on the winter aquaponics plants growth. In today’s video we can appreciate the growth of the winter plants. We will see celery, bock choy/pack choy, silver beet, strawberries, kale and beetroots. 2 of the aquaponics systems we are following are in poor position. Indeed, they are just underneath a cypress tree and the sun exposition is very low. Despite those extreme conditions (low temperature and low sunlight), the plants are still growing. The aim of this video is to demonstrate that you can still produce food in aquaponics in the 4 seasons of the year, as long as you grow adapted crop species.
Greenhouse, a game changer for aquaponics winter plants!
If you can afford a greenhouse, it will make a massive difference on your aquaponics winter plants growth.
You will probably be able to maintain a reasonable temperature and avoid the frost during the night. Hence you will grow more quantity and probably more diversity (allowing you to grow plants with higher temperature expectations).
If you live in a tropical country you don’t have this problem but greenhouses also have the advantage to diffuse the sun light. Therefore, instead of having all plants competing in high for light, they can grow normally and will produce more. Be careful however to not reach extreme temperatures in summer. You can equip your greenhouse with windows and fans to regulate the temperature.
