When I discovered this aquaponics water pump trick I couldn’t wait to try it… It’s been few months now that I use it and let me tell you, it’s a real game changer!
The classic aquaponics water pump maintenance…
You know how frustrating it can be to discover a growbed with a bell siphon not working. It is generally due to a water flow decrease. In some setups it can happen every 2 weeks. Every time it requires to inspect the pump and clean the solids stuck on the “filter” or “cage”. If this action takes 2 minutes, it requires to get the hands wet. It’s never a good experience.
The trick!
So here is the trick: some water pump brands are offering extensions kits. Those kits allow to remove the water pump cage and to replace it with a pipe surrounded by a filtration foam. This filtration pipe has got a very large surface. It doesn’t clog easily and will ensure a continuous supply of water to the pump. With this type of equipment, you will only have to clean your water pump once every few months. It’s a significant improvement as it dramatically reduces the human maintenance needs!
Also the filtration is finer. If you have fish that breed such as tilapia, it will avoid to see the young ones sucked by the water pump.
Finally, this system add surface area for the bacteria. If you have a growbed aquaponics system, this surface will probably not be significant but in aquariums it is crucial!
