You might be part of those people who are tempted by aquaponics but can’t commit. Indeed, here is a statements that I hear too often: “I would love to be able to grow my own vegetables and fish in an aquaponics system. However, I also like going on holiday and nobody would be able to take care of the aquaponics during this period”. Well, you may be surprised as I have good news for you…
Finding my aquaponics system after 2 weeks holiday
I have been overseas for 2 weeks and I am just back. While I was on holiday, nobody came to take care of the fish in the aquaponics system. As explained in my previous videos, I prefer to leave the fish without food. In their natural environment, the fish are able to survive for weeks and sometimes months without food. The fasting period generally happens in winter but your fish will easily survive few weeks without food. When we come back, we can slowly feed them. The first meals are generally small until they develop their appetite. In this instance the fish don’t seem to have lost much weight. Here is an interesting article about fish food / flesh appearance
Harvesting a productive system
The beautiful thing when you come back from holiday is to see the plants growth. You were away and during this time the plants continued to grow and produced a significant quantity of food. All you must do is to harvest. Unlike a classic garden that would slowly die if nobody was there to water it. Your aquaponics system is thriving in your absence. No work is needed, and it produces sustaarinable, healthy and tasty food.
