When we position our aquaponics system outdoor, it is subject to the weather. It involves sun, wind, temperature and rain. Some of those elements can have a significant impact on the growth of our aquaponics system. I receive many queries about the influence of rain on aquaponics. In this video/article, I will list the different impacts that rain can have:
1 Rain will increase the water level of your aquaponics
Heavy rains will increase the water level. Indeed, if you have a sump tank, the water level will increase until it reaches the overflow or the top of the tank. But if your aquaponics system is not equipped with a sump tank, then the water will flood over the fish tank when the bell siphon flushes.
2 Rain dilute the nitrogen concentration
As the water level increase, the molecules are diluted. The concentration of ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. If you are starting aquaponics with not enough fish it may not be great. But if you have an established population of fish, you will be happy to see your nitrogen slightly reduce. However, this dilution generally doesn’t last for long. Instead, the bacteria and organic matters present into the grow-bed will quickly release new elements and the concentrations will raise again. See this video about nitrate levels for aquaponics. However, it will probably not significantly affect your plants growth.
